How do we define a semi-conductor? It's mainly produced of materials with certain resistance (it is among that of a conductor and a non-conductor). Changes in temperature or the part of admixtures also affect the electrical resistance.
The material is known to have impurities if some different substances have been mixed to it. The complete mixture labels the semi-conductors as thyristors of type-n or type-t.
They produce diodes as well as transistors using both these types of semi-conductors. Now silicon is apparently becoming the most popular material for making semi-conductors.
In order to keep the stream of electrical current in simply one direction diodes are used. They are produced of semiconductor substance. There is a component of + (positive) combination, - (negative) combination and pn-transfer appointed as barrier level in each diode. Diodes produce electrical circuits transforming among direct and alternating current. Just a 1/2 of the processes or cycle is to pass by as diodes let current go only in a single direction. Rectifier is the word for such a combination.
Concerning the light diodes that figure as LED, they are used to produce light at small voltages avoiding generating heat. Now they apply LED diodes as the light fixing the idle mode of various electronic equipment.
Moore's law led to the popularization of thyristors manufactures. The most important factor for manufacturinfg complicated power semi-conductor devices at smaller prices is now lithography. Speaking of optical lithography, it now gives way to the development of other technologies as it has met its physical limit. Presumedly ultraviolet lithography and nano-imprint lithography can become the successors to optical lithography. Read the rest of this entry »
There is a divided type of matters that is called quasi-conductors. People got known about these materials in the end of the 19th century, but just in the 20th century scientists managed to obtain more knowledge about them. In 1923 Russian physicists proved the ability of utilizing of semiconductor-metal contacts to accelerate the generation of fluctuations. There was no opportunity to develop some unique devices as diodes. First transistor was developed in Bell's laboratory in 1949. This event impacted on the fast development of semiconductor devices. Since then a lot of persons all over the world become interested in such kind of substance as semiconductors.
Induced emission is actually a quite interesting characteristic of semiconductors that has been discovered for several tens of years. It led to the appearing of semiconductor laser device based on usage of p - n barriers and then on heterojunction.
